The agreement
Terms of use
Plain terms for a writing app. The short of it: your writing is yours, Margin only reads it to answer you, and you pay through the Mac App Store.
Last updated 13 October 2026
This agreement
These terms are between you and [seller’s legal name] (“Margin”, “we”). By using Margin you agree to them. Apple’s standard licence for apps from the App Store also applies; where the two differ about the app itself, Apple’s licence wins.
Who can use Margin
You must be 18 or over. Margin’s AI tools are offered only in the countries and regions Anthropic supports, and only while you’re in one of them.
Your writing
- You keep all rights to your writing. Margin claims none.
- When you use an AI tool, you let Margin send the text that tool needs to Anthropic, only to answer that request. We don’t store it, and we use it for nothing else.
- Neither Margin nor Anthropic trains AI models on your writing.
What Claude returns
Margin is an editor, not a writer. Its tools describe your text, flag mechanical errors and answer questions about it; they don’t write your prose. Whatever rights Margin receives in what Claude returns to you, Margin assigns to you.
Check what Claude says
Claude can be wrong. Don’t rely on a factual claim in its notes, answers or suggested readings without checking it, and accept a proofreading fix only if it’s right for your text. Every change Margin suggests waits for your approval, and every accepted change can be undone.
Using Margin fairly
- Follow Anthropic’s Usage Policy in what you send.
- Use Margin’s AI tools through the app, as they’re meant to be used. Don’t try to use Margin’s server for anything else, get around its limits, or share your access.
- Don’t copy, resell or reverse-engineer the service.
To keep Margin working for everyone, requests have reasonable limits on size and pace. We may suspend access for misuse, and we’ll tell you why.
Subscriptions and the trial
- Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple through the Mac App Store, monthly or yearly.
- New subscribers start with a free trial of 7 days. Unless you cancel before it ends, the subscription begins and renews automatically at the plan’s price.
- A subscription renews each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Manage or cancel it in your App Store account settings.
- Refunds are handled by Apple, under Apple’s rules.
- Upgrades take effect at once; downgrades at the next renewal.
Your monthly allowance
- Each plan includes a monthly allowance of AI reading. It renews with your subscription and doesn’t carry over.
- Top-ups you buy separately never expire. They’re used after the month’s allowance.
- If your allowance runs out, the AI tools pause until it renews. Everything else keeps working. Hover over a tool’s button to see an estimate of what it will use.
When a subscription ends
Editing and the AI tools pause. Margin still opens your writing, exports it and shows it in Finder, and because every piece is a plain Markdown file, any other app can open it too. Subscribe again and everything picks up where it was.
Changes to Margin and to these terms
Margin will change as it improves, and some features depend on Anthropic and Apple. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we’ll say so in the app before the change takes effect. Continuing to use Margin after that means you accept them.
Warranties and liability
Margin is provided as it is. As far as the law allows, we make no promises about it beyond these terms, and we don’t defend you against claims about anything Claude returns. As far as the law allows, our total liability to you is limited to what you paid for Margin in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits rights you have as a consumer that can’t be limited by contract.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of [jurisdiction].
