Questions

No, never. Margin reads; you write. Proofreading only offers mechanical fixes, and a built-in check throws out anything that rewrites more than a couple of words. Notes, the Story brain and Expand describe what’s on the page. Ask won’t write a sentence even when you ask for one: it shows you what that part of your text does now, and asks what you intend.

Claude, by Anthropic. Margin picks the Claude model and the depth of reading for each tool, so there’s nothing to set up or choose.

Yes. The editor, your jottings, Rhythm, snapshots, export, Publish and Ambience all work without it. You can switch each AI tool off in Settings › Tools, or turn on Offline mode to block every request.

No. It’s for novels, stories, essays and newsletters. On an essay, the Story brain maps the thesis, the shape of the argument, logic gaps and unsupported claims.

Up to 120,000 words, so every tool can read the whole of it at once. When you reach it, Margin offers to split the book in two at the chapter you choose, with its notes, fixes and jottings, after taking a snapshot of the whole book.

In a folder called Margin in your iCloud Drive, or on your Mac if iCloud Drive is off. Every piece is a plain Markdown file you can open in any app. Margin’s notes and snapshots sit beside it in a hidden .margin folder, and Margin’s server never sees any of it.

No. Anthropic’s commercial terms don’t allow it to train its models on what Margin sends, and Margin doesn’t train anything on your writing either. The privacy policy has the details.

Yes, if it’s Markdown or plain text: drag the file onto the sidebar, or choose File › Import…. It’s copied into your library and opens straight away. Headings become chapters.

Any time. Export to PDF, Word, RTF, HTML, Markdown or plain text, or Publish to Substack, Medium, Ghost, WordPress, beehiiv and others. And every piece is already a plain Markdown file in your folder.

Yes. Settings › Privacy lists every request: when it was sent, which tool, how many characters and tokens. The log never contains your text.

Yes: seven days with every tool, through the Mac App Store. Cancel any time in your App Store settings.

The AI tools pause until your allowance renews, and everything else keeps working. In a big month you can top up, or move to a larger plan.

Your writing stays yours. Margin still opens it, exports it and shows it in Finder; editing and the AI tools pause until you subscribe again. And because every piece is a plain file, any other app can open it too.

A Mac with macOS 26 or later.

The editor, your jottings, Rhythm, snapshots, export and Ambience all work offline. The AI tools need a connection. Offline mode, in Settings › Privacy or the Editor menu, blocks every request.

Not yet. Margin is a Mac app. If your library is in iCloud Drive, your writing is on your other devices too, as plain files any app can open.
